Fabien Barrero-Carsenat / Foundry craftman designer
Since 2013, Fabien Barrero-Carsenat has rooted himself in the heart of the Périgord Noir, in the hilltop hamlet of Baran, nestled among forests not far from the famed Lascaux caves. Within this storied landscape, shaped by generations of farming ancestors over nearly two centuries, the designer has reclaimed his grandfather’s barn and transformed it into his studio: a return to origins and a quiet manifesto of contemporary simplicity.
Far from the noise of the city, FBC cultivates a rare form of autonomy, grounded in local resources and guided by a philosophy of “global thinking, local action.” Nearly all the materials used in his creations are sourced within a ten-kilometer radius. The wax for his bronze sculptures comes from the hives of a neighboring beekeeper. The wood (chestnut, oak, and hornbeam) is harvested carefully from the family forest, just across from the studio, using only fallen trees or those selected through natural thinning. No tree is felled without purpose: every material is respected, every resource honored.
In 2017, following three years of patient research and experimentation, the foundry came to life. Built entirely from materials salvaged from nearby construction sites (old bricks, scrap metal, repurposed elements) it embodies the spirit of the place. The bronze alloy is custom-made in-house, mainly using discarded copper pipes traded from local plumbers, and tin sourced from damaged or forgotten vessels: dented jugs or pots.
Over time, an ecosystem of exchange has emerged, built on trust and mutual support. “I help you, you help me” a quiet, circular economy that resists the pressures of speed and scale. Life here follows a different rhythm, one of slowness, silence, and attention.
This slower pace informs Fabien’s work. His artistic approach explores the memory held in materials, landscapes, and both vernacular and industrial architecture. He deconstructs, reshapes, and reimagines fragments of the past, allowing the process itself to leave its mark, like the trace of a mold, the burn of fusion, the imperfection of a gesture.
Each object carries a quiet aura, a tangible presence. It reveals and gently reminds us that beauty often hides in the places we no longer think to look.

Depuis 2013, Fabien Barrero-Carsenat s’est ancré au cœur du Périgord Noir, dans le hameau de Baran, perché sur une colline bordée de forêts, non loin de Lascaux. Là, au sein de ce territoire chargé d’histoire, façonné par ses aïeux paysans depuis près de deux siècles, le designer a réinvesti la grange de son grand-père pour y installer son atelier : un retour aux sources autant qu’un manifeste de sobriété contemporaine.
A l’écart de l’agitation urbaine, FBC cultive une forme d’autonomie rare, ancrée dans le local, pensée dans une logique de "management global, actions locales". Les ressources mobilisées pour ses créations sont, pour la grande majorité, issues d’un rayon de dix kilomètres. La cire utilisée pour les bronzes provient des ruches d’un voisin apiculteur. Le bois, est extrait avec soin des châtaigniers, chênes et charmes issus d’éclaircies naturelles ou tombés lors de tempêtes, dans la forêt familiale qui fait face à l’atelier. Aucun arbre n’est abattu sans nécessité : ici, chaque matériau est respecté, chaque ressource honorée.
En 2017, après trois années de recherches patientes et d’expérimentations, la fonderie voit le jour. Construite de toutes pièces à partir de matériaux recyclés glanés sur des chantiers alentour – briques anciennes, ferrailles, pièces détournées –, elle incarne à elle seule l’esprit du lieu. Le bronze y est coulé selon un alliage personnel, composé de chutes de tuyaux de cuivre échangées auprès d’artisans locaux et d’étain d’objets délaissés : cruches bosselées, pots abimés.
Un écosystème d’échange s’est mis en place, fondé sur des valeurs d’entraide et de confiance. « Je t’aide, tu m’aides » : une économie circulaire et désintéressée, précieuse dans un monde où tout s’accélère. Car vivre ici impose un autre rythme, celui du temps long, du silence, de l’observation. Ce ralentissement imprègne le travail de Fabien. Sa démarche artistique explore la mémoire des matières, des paysages, de l’architecture vernaculaire comme industrielle. Il déconstruit, recompose, redonne forme à des fragments du passé, tout en laissant les traces du processus émerger : la marque d’un moule, la brûlure d’assemblage, l’imperfection d’un geste.
L’objet porte en lui une aura, une présence. Il capte l’insignifiant, sublime le banal. Et nous rappelle, avec pudeur, que la beauté réside souvent là où l’œil ne regarde plus.
